HANDHELD GAME CONSOLE CONFIGURATOR
UNREAL ENGINE SOLO PROJECT
4 weeks
WINTER
2024
• THE IDEA
This configurator lets the user design a handheld gaming device inspired by Nintendo's GameBoy and Switch consoles. The different screen sizes comes with separate layouts for the components, which can be placed in any order at any location, allowing for all sorts of combinations imaginable.
• WHAT I DID
I wanted to challenge myself by making a configurator where I needed to plan out every part and component I needed to make a realistic model of a game console, and where it was necessary to be very precise with units and size in Blender. I also had to take every possible combination of component placement in consideration.
This was my first time working in Unreal Engine, so a big challenge was getting the right components to the right location, and not overlapping with each other. Using the holographic modules as anchor points helped me in getting the placement right, but the Blueprints and code would look a lot different if I remade this configurator today. A lack of planning on the coding-part led to a lot of "patchwork", something I made sure not to repeat in the following City Planner project.
• FURTHER IMPROVEMENT
If I were to expand further on this project I would like to add more components, more detail and more layout options for the configurator. I would also like a mode where the user can press buttons and move joysticks, making the configurator more interactive and realistic.
Materials was created in Unreal Engine and the "GamePal" was designed in Photoshop and attached to the screens with an emissive decal material.
